This site will tell what pistons do and how they work. |

HOW PISTONS WORK:
STEP 1. The piston goes down sucking in a mixture of air and fuel into the cylinder. STEP 2. The piston goes up compressing the mixture of air and fuel, this heats the mixture. STEP 3. The spark from the spark plug ignites the mixture. The gases expand and force the piston down. STEP 4. The piston rises again, pushing out the remains of burnt gases and exhaust fumes.
WHAT PISTONS DO. If you don't have any pistons in your car obviously it will not work. Because the pistons turn the crankshaft and the gears connect to the crankshaft and to the drive shaft. Then the driveshaft turns the wheels through more gears, called the differential lock. Which makes the car move. So the more pistons your car has for example V-8 400 hsp ( 8 pistons in a v shape) it will go very fast.
