|
The Central Otago railway line reached Middlemarch in 1891. For years it served as the life line for residents in remote locations along its length transporting passengers, goods, farm produce such as wool and cream as well as livestock. When the line was no longer profitable to maintain it was lifted but the popularity of the , a Dunedin volunteer group of train enthusiasts, and the enthusiasm of the Strath Taieri Lions succeeded in the line being kept open as far as Middlemarch. Lions leased the railway buildings and have not only restored the station building itself but beautified the station precinct. The renovated station now houses a nature and history display as well as a well-stocked craft shop with local art and crafts.
